About Matalan
Matalan is a leading UK and international retailer, delivering outstanding value in fashion and homeware. With over 270 stores and a robust e-commerce platform, Matalan is a brand millions trust.
Matalan Retail Ltd., based in Knowsley, Merseyside, was established by John Hargreaves in 1985 and remains owned by the Hargreaves family. As of 2020, the company employed over 13,000 people and had 230 stores in the UK, along with franchise stores in the Middle East.
The first Matalan store opened in 1985 at Bamber Bridge, Lancashire. By 1995, there were fifty stores, and in 1997, the company moved its headquarters from Preston to Skelmersdale. Matalan was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1998 but was taken private by the Hargreaves family in 2006. Despite efforts to sell Matalan in 2009, the asking price was unmet.
