About BPA

British Pipeline Agency Ltd (BPA) is a joint venture between BP Oil UK and Shell UK. It was set up in 1969. BPA runs oil pipelines across the UK, moving fuel to key areas.

BPA took over pipeline operations from Shell Mex & BP in the late 1960s. It became the main operator for the Government Pipeline and Storage System (GPSS). At first, this system had 1,600 miles of pipelines. These carried 7.25 million tons of light oils every year.

BPA stayed in charge of the GPSS until the 1990s. After that, other companies began to run parts of the system through contracts.

The BPA board has five directors, but up to ten are allowed. One is the chairman, one is the general manager, and there is also a company secretary. The main office is in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.

In 2020, BPA made a pre-tax profit of £1.49 million. It has close to 200 employees.
